Impressionist Painter found in Spain!

Impressionist painter found in Spain!

If you haven't heard of Joaquin Sorolla then you are in for a treat. I only discovered him myself a few years ago when travelling through Spain.

How could I not have heard of this great painter? His paintings were every bit as good as the French Impressionist painters but he's never been covered off in any text books or art history I was exposed to.

During his lifetime (B. Valencia, Spain 1863-1923) Sorolla mastered portrait and landscape painting. He developed a fluid style and achieved recognition in Spain, and made it into collections internationally including major museums.

Like several of the French Impressionists he travelled to America to exhibit his work where he found an appreciative audience.

He frequently painted his family including his children as subject matter, and was passionate about his Andalusian style garden, another frequent subject for his paintings.

As a gardener he loved flowers and they feature in many of his portrait paintings such as this one of his children.

The detail of the flowers is exquisite on closer inspection.

Luckily Sorolla's home and painting studio were donated to the Spanish government after the death of his widow and it has become the Sorolla museum in Madrid. The Museum includes his Andalusian garden complete with tiled areas, waterways, shady palms, hedges and a fountain.

I'm excited to say that I am including a visit to the Sorolla Museum on my forthcoming French Art School Tour to Spain and Morocco October 18-31, 2016. There are two places left to book on the tour.

I can't wait to see the house, his studio, the paintings and the Andalusian garden. For more details about the French Art School to Spain and Morocco cut and paste this link to your search bar;
